Sam was laughing at Luke’s anecdote. Not forcing a dutiful smile but actually laughing. Ben watched her flick her hair and wipe a tear from the corner of her eye. Tonight she was beautiful, sexy and surprisingly feminine…and regrettably she thought he was the new Larry Flynt.

‘She scrubs up well, doesn’t she?’

Ben, embarrassed at having been caught staring so blatantly, returned his focus to Gemma.

‘Yup, maybe I should be thinking about finding you a job as a stylist…’

Gemma’s eyes shone at the compliment. ‘And thanks for finding Luke. This is just what Sam needed. She’s had a terrible week.’

‘Her dad. I know.’

‘And… Well…no, it’s not for me to say.’

‘What?’ Ben’s imagination ran amok.

Gemma shook her head. It had taken nearly four months of flat-sharing to be admitted into Sam’s inner circle of confidence. ‘Anyway, cheers…’ Gemma clinked her glass against Ben’s. ‘Here’s to us.’

‘Us?’ Ben’s throat felt a little narrower than normal as he took his next sip. Why did Ali always have to be right?
